We are told by God to keep our thoughts on eternal things, not temporary, worldly things. How often do you catch yourself doing the latter? If you are anything like me it is often. We get caught up in our emotions, our selfishness, our wants for the here and now. With no regard for the future or next generation, we become angry, resentful, and bitter, among other things because we have our eyes fixed on right now and on what will make my flesh feel good. I want to examine some reasons God tells us to think eternally so maybe we will begin not only doing this, but also understanding why.
One reason we are told to do this is because with our minds on heavenly things, we can do the will of God with a mind like God. We won’t think of ourselves so much, but others as we are commanded to do. We will have the right heart toward others. We think that when our needs and wants are met that we will be happier. This is not the case at all. The flesh is never satisfied, but always wanting more. When we are thinking eternally, we see that regardless of our wants being met or not, we are so much more peaceful and joyful. We, being made in the likeness of God, are at peace and blessed most when we act and do as He does.
There is a saying ‘Get out of yourself’ that means “you are being selfish”. If you have ever saw a person that is into themselves, you can see how selfish and self-absorbed they are. The look is not pretty, but the opposite, ugly and childish.
Another reason we are told to think eternally is because all this stuff accumulated here will be gone, never to return. So, why hang on to temporary, fleeting things? By the way, there is not one thing that you own. God owns it all. He allows us to experience things, but never does He sign over to you anything. It is all His. Holding on to things that are not yours causes undue stress, bitterness and you begin to have a controlling spirit. We all know that nobody likes a controll freak.
One last reason to not think worldly with temporal thoughts leading you is when we do so, we blame God for things that happen that seem bad and may be bad temporarily. But, God sees way ahead and He acts in response to the end result, not the here and now result. We will never know all the why’s to bad things that happen, at least not this side of heaven, but we can know for sure that God’s end results are for our good and not only our good, but future generation’s good as well. So, when tempted to blame God and say He is not good, watch yourself because just because you don’t understand the reasons, He does and acts accordingly.. God is always good. That is His nature. God bless you as you go about your day thinking eternally. Think on these things: things that are true, noble, just, pure, honest, lovely, of good report, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise – think on these things. Philippians 4:8.
