How to Overcome Sin: Are you sin conscience or Spirit conscience? Your answer determines whether you are able to overcome sin. The word conscience is defined as an inner feeling or voice viewed as acting as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one’s behavior.

If we are sin conscience, we cannot walk in step with the Spirit and if Spirit conscience, we cannot be led by the flesh. What we think upon determines where our focus lies. Just as you cannot look at two different things at once, at least not fully focused, you also cannot dwell on sin and the Spirit simultaneously. The 2 are at war with one another and your decision or focus determines who you are in step with. Paul tells us in Roman’s 7:14 and on that he has found when he wants to do good, sin is right there to trip him up. That the good he wants to do, he does not do and every time he finds in his mind he loves God’s law, but in his flesh sin always wins. So, what are we to do? Verse 25 says, ‘Praise be to God who delivers us through Jesus Christ’. He is telling us that if we put our thoughts and focus on Jesus Christ that sin has no victory. Romans 8:1 says, ‘Therefore, there is now NO CONDEMNATION to them that are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit’. We must be Spirit minded to overcome sin. The two wage war against one another for only one will win and we determine which that will be.

Aerosmith came out with a song titled Walk this Way in the 80’s and this song pretty much sums it up. You see, when our minds are on Spirit things, we walk that way, we talk that way and when our minds are on fleshly things, we walk that way, we talk that way, right into sin. Who are you listening to? Your lifestyle tells it all.

If you happen to see that you are walking and talking fleshly things, just stop. Re-focus, turn around and put those eyes on Jesus, and begin walking His way, talking His way and you will be the most astonished person around because you will find that you are walking in step with Him, the Spirit.

No need to beat yourself up for there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. It is just a matter of putting your focus on Jesus, not sin.

Today, brothers and sisters, determine where your focus is, where your walking and talking. If you find that you are not Spirit minded, you still have time to change directions and walk His way. Be blessed.
