Melissa means honeybee and originates from ancient Greek. The name Melissa is derived from the Hebrew name Devorah. Devorah was a judge in the Bible, a very wise and fair judge. She told Barack that he would go to war and win, but Barack was fearful and refused unless she went with him. She explained to him that if she went with him that the victory would have her name on it instead of his name which is exactly what happened. Devorah shows me that women leaders are ok with God, but my personal view is that this should only happen if there are no men to step up. Just my personal thinking – not saying it is God’s. Thus, Devorah received recognition for the victory that should have been Baracks alone.
The name Melissa is a sweet and timeless name. When I was young (age 1-5), I was called Lissa for short. When I went to 1st grade, I came home one day and asked to change my name. My mom told me ok and asked what I wanted my name to be. I came up with several names to which she quickly discounted. Finally, she questioned aloud if Melissa would work. That way it is kinda close to Lissa and easier to remember. Well, I was elated that I could change my name so I readily accepted without ever knowing Melissa was my given name anyway. A 6 year old that changed her name. Miss Big Shot… I thought.
