Give Me Sugar:

I am a sugarholic which means I would prefer my meals to be all sugar if I could choose that path and be healthy.

Unfortunately, this can’t be. I went on the Adkins diet 2 weeks ago cutting my carb intake to 20 or below. This is a hard feat for anyone. You don’t realize how many carbs are in foods. Normal carb intake should be around 100 or less. We consume a lot more than that on a daily basis. Then, wonder why our kids and ourselves are fat. With the Adkins diet, you will not see a difference for about 3 weeks at below 20 carbs daily. But, when you do begin seeing a difference the weight just falls off. The bigger you are the quicker you see results.

I did this diet in my 30’s when I didn’t really need to lose weight but at that time, skinny was in so I decided to diet. It took about a month for me to see results. This time I saw results after 10 days. Keep in mind I am a lot bigger now and older so that makes a difference.

This diet is not for the faint of heart. It is a hard diet to endure and costly. I buy the pre-made dinners because cooking would be more expensive and this way I don’t put a lot of thought into it. Just count carbs and stay below 20 a day. This equals out to either 3 Adkins meals per day ( not much food ) or 2 meals per day with a shake (Adkins) and a couple Adkins candies. The candies are great. They taste like real sweets, however; they are not real big, but they fill the sugar cravings for the moment.

My problem is discipline and exercise. Hate both, but much needed in my life. Until I turned 47, I could eat whatever and never gain weight so I thought I was scotfree. Wrong!!! At 47, it all changed. My metabolism slowed to a crawl overnight and my hunger pains were constant, especially for sugar. My weight continued on an upward spiral until I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and didn’t recognize the person staring back. At that point, I did what I do best. I ignored the mirror and pretended like all was the same as before. Bad decision. My blood pressure climbed when before it stayed at 120/80 all the time. With diabetes running in my family this was a bad decision.

As far as I know I do not have diabetes, but if I continue the way I have been doing and don’t lose weight the chances are high that I will be diabetic soon. Thus the Adkins diet. So, when asked what snack I would eat right now? It has to be an Adkins candy bar with 3 net carbs. Yummy…
