We all break laws from time to time for different reasons. Maybe we didn’t see that stop sign or maybe we did. Maybe we forgot to scan that item in self checkout or maybe we didn’t forget. Maybe we forgot to renew our tag or maybe we didn’t, just needed the money for something else. The good news is most things are not devastating mishaps. But, what if they were devastating? Would we forget less? Probably so.
However, there are some laws that are just plain stupid and should never have become a law to begin with.
I live in Alabama and our lovely governor (haha) recently passed a law that homeless people would be locked up if caught. I understand that some homeless folks made that choice by actions taken, but there are many that did not choose homelessness. Circumstances and life threw a curveball and wham, there they are. I also believe all people deserve second chances. So, even those homeless people that made choices that led to being homeless deserve a second chance. It is called grace and we all need grace from time to time.
Getting back to this ridiculous law passed, jail may be an option they like. I mean who pays for this service? We do. The citizens of Alabama. Who can work and save money behind bars? The real clincher to this law is that when the federal government sent money to every state to disperse as the governor saw fit she built prisons. I guess these prisons have a lot of vacancies so the intention of locking up homeless people fills the bill.
Instead of helping these folks get back on their feet somehow, Alabama has decided that they are not worth helping so we will incarcerate them and throw away the key. I guess these fine upstanding people who bandwagoned this law have never needed a helping hand. How wonderful for them. But, time has a way of bringing attention to your selfishness and snooty attitude so it won’t be long before a 180 is done. I mean she is 76 years old so time is not on her side. How horrible to be in your late 70’s, early 80’s and discover you have no one to help or support you. Time to pay the piper, so to speak.
I say this but in no way could I leave stranded an elderly person no matter what they may deserve. I am not the sentence giver. That is God’s job and from what I understand He gives grace, over and over.
