A Dream that Dies

Five? What did I want to be when I grew up? I barely remember 10, so at five years old I doubt that ever crossed my mind. If it did I would guess that I just wanted to grow up, period. At five I was probably thinking about playing, eating candy or wishing my brother would leave me alone. Other than that nothing else crossed my mind I would guess.

So, let’s start at 10 years old. For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be an attorney. Later psychology became an option, but attorney was still on top. I have not a clue as to why an attorney because I despise them today and have for quite some time. Like leaches, they suck the life out of people while bleeding them dry of money.

The problem is that most things require an attorney and for those that cannot afford them – well, they are screwed, to put it nicely. Take an estate left when someone dies, well, if they do not have a will in place then, an attorney must be sought. The kicker is that even if there is a will, an attorney must be sought to probate it. So, you must get an attorney to draw up a will, then the party receiving the estate must get an attorney to probate the will. What kind of sick joke is that? Either way an attorney must be sought. So, why even have a will? No answers can explain this.

Then, you have the ambulance chasers or personal injury lawyers is the term they came up with. These only receive payment if they win. As you can guess, the only cases they take are winnable ones. Then, they take 40% of the winnings. Almost half and for filing a little paperwork that a 10 year old could file. They have the client running around doing most of the work such as getting statements, notorizing affidavits and sometimes taking your paperwork to the courthouse putting off your case as long as possible, then 2 weeks before court date they run around madly collecting info that they have had 2 years to collect. And we wonder why we lose the case. Hmmm…What a piece of work they are with no scruples attached.

But, at 10 years old my idea of becoming an attorney was to fight for those that could not fight. I didn’t know at the time that this was the reason or at least could not verbalize it, but I knew I could do good with this profession. I wanted to help people, not abuse them.

For years I dreamed of becoming an attorney, but with no support or money for college the dream died. As I grew older I would observe situations where an attorney was required and with that requirement came money and lots of it if you wanted a positive verdict. The states will counter with the quote, ‘If you cannot afford an attorney one will be appointed for you at no cost because the constitution states that all people deserve counsel’. Yes, they do deserve counsel or have a right to counsel and yes one will be appointed to you if needed, but that is where it ends. You will not win. You will not have counsel that works for you, even with money you may not, but rest assured that without money you don’t stand a chance. This profession has become an embarrassment for the ‘good’ ones that do exist. The ones that when taking the oath required meant every word stated instead of just mouthing the words because it is part of becoming an advocate for those that need one. They have made a mockery out of what should be a stand up profession. We need lawyers to protect us from lawyers.

This is a money making machine for the government. Look at the people in prison that have been put there but are innocent. How many of these get out when proven innocent? Not many. Why? Well, 2 reasons exist. The first is the state, city, county, whatever branch of government you pick does not like to be wrong and certainly won’t admit it. The other reason is money. Fear of being sued keeps innocent people in prison. Where is the freedom in that as our nation loves to proclaim we are? Freedom eludes us and will continue to until we as the people demand change, then vote that change in.

I would not consider this profession as one I would dream of if 10 years old today. How unfortunate for the nation, for those that need an advocate, for all people everywhere. To make a change, a change must be made, by us, the citizens of the USA.
