The year 1965 was a year that gave hope to so many Americans, the black Americans, that is. In 1965, the right to vote was not always offered to black Americans. States could block this right if they so chose and a lot of states did just that, but in August 1965, President Johnson signed into law the Voting Rights Act which prohibited states to deny blacks this right. Of course, in the South the Jim Crow Law prohibited this fundamental right so 3 marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama took place in 1965 which bolstered the Voting Rights Act and this law was signed into place. This may not seem like much and it took time for change to occur, but the first step was put in motion for change to begin. The rest is history.
Another great yet sad event that took place in 1965 was when Martin Luther King was assassinated. A horrible day for all black Americans and seemingly a day that hope could have been lost, but Dr. King had made his mark and had given one of the greatest speeches ever written. This speech and the vision of seeing the ‘promised land’ would encourage black Americans to continue fighting for God given rights to all people and that is exactly what happened and the rest is history.
The most iconic thing that happened in 1965 which we have the advantage or disadvantage of using is the internet was created in 1965. Yes, that’s right, 1965 hailed the creation of the internet. Can you imagine a world without the internet? Seems our lives only exist because of this wonderful creation. Well, I for one don’t ride that boat. I wonder if our world might not be better if the internet had continued sleeping. But, I will never know for the rest is history.
The year 1965 had its fill of both happy and sad events, but in the end even the sad events made history and made the playing fields more level.
