The Time Thief

A mirror is used daily by everyone, multiple times at best. We gaze into this object that reflects back to us an image. The mirror keeps us looking our best if wanted or even looking not so great at times. It is all up to the one gazing at the image, but one thing is for sure – the mirror never lies. It tells us precisely how we look. Our hair, our clothes, our make-up and whatever else we see is exactly as the mirror suggests. An inanimate object with the power to show us the truth about our appearance shouldn’t be able to decide how we think of ourselves, yet it does a lot of the time.

We can stand and peer for hours in the depths of the mirror. Straightening this, adjusting that until we are somewhat satisfied with our work and only then do we move on. We become fixated on the image before us critiquing every little flaw and never fully satisfied with the results. The mirror is a must-have and most of us have a portable one as well. If not, the rear view mirror in the car will suffice. The time and energy spent on this routine is unimaginable if we think about it. We are so consumed with the outside that the inside, the motor so to speak gets little to no attention and slowly you die within.

Imagine if we could use this time thief to really understand ourselves. To look long and hard at the reflection we see and get completely honest about the images peering back at us. The deeper images, the ones not so visible to the world, but the ones we know are there hiding behind whatever we can find to stay out of view. Imagine the transformation that could take place simply by looking long and hard in the mirror. Gazing with an open mind, an honest accessment, and a willingness and desire to change. We could change the world or at least make it a better place to be.

So, how does this happen you may ask. Well, first I want to be totally honest with you about this experience. It will be the hardest thing you ever undertake, but the take-a-way is worth every minute. The beginning of this journey can be brutal. The person you see in that mirror is ugly and fierce. You see, we hide so many things underneath, compiling one thing on top of another until we lose sight of who we are, where we are going, and our lives become a lie. A lie we have built and this lie is ugly and it does not want to go, but it must if we are to ever know who we really are and what our purpose on earth is. How sad it would be to wake up one day and realize life has passed us by and we are living on borrowed time. When we look into the mirror we will only see a shell, an empty shell and we won’t even recognize the person peering back at us. It doesn’t have to end this way.

Things are about to change. This is a new day and borrowed time or not, there is still time. So, go gaze into that mirror, look long and deep. Baby steps are recommended at first. Begin searching your heart and mind, searching honestly, speaking truth out loud. Truth, not what you want truth to be, but simple truth. Cry if needed, scream if needed, kick if necessary, but allow yourself some time and demand that stranger leave. You were created for so much more than this facade.

Go take a peek. Begin peeling away those layers of lies one by one. Grow, get to know that person looking back at you, love on that one of a kind being. Don’t turn back, keep going, you are almost there. Then one day you will stand again before the ‘Thief of Time’ and realize you know that person staring back at you and hey, you can actually see how you two could click. Then, you will walk away a new person, free from bondage and embracing the person you were meant to be.

You did not create the image staring back at you in a few days so understand time is needed to get to know the inner you. Love on that new man or woman. Speak life to him/her. Be patient with yourself and before long the real you will emerge from underneath, strong and beautiful. Don’t let the thief of time hold you back any longer.
