All my life I had dreamed of being able to transport myself from place to place in the blink of an eye. This super power I desired would not only save time, but also allow me to get more done. At least that was what I thought. So, one morning I awoke and things just seemed different. Nothing I could lay my finger on, but different nonetheless.
As I lay in bed going over my day I thought of seeing my grandson soon. Suddenly, I was transported to Texas standing at the front door of my daughter’s house. What just happened I mused. Seeing that no one seemed to notice what had just occurred I knocked softly on the front door. As I was about to knock again the door flew open as to invite me in, but no one was on the other side. I gingerly stepped inside calling out names to let them know I was there.
My daughter appeared in a flash asking why I looked so bewildered. I explained to her what had occurred at which she didn’t seem surprised at all. After finishing my story she laughed and said, ‘OK, so why the look of amazement. You have been doing this for years now.’ I was at a complete loss of words. She goes on to explain that my super power allowed me to transport from place to place just by thinking it. She also explained that she envied my super power as hers was simply telling inanimate objects to move which explained the front door opening while she was in another part of the house.
Can this be happening? Is this real? Question after question seemed to be rolling around in my head. As I was about to ask where Mike, her husband, was, he walks up beside her telling her he had learned that the neighbors were going to be moving soon. Kate looked sternly at him while explaining that something must be done with his super power. Being able to read the minds of people within 20 feet of him was an invasion of privacy.
How did all this happen, I wondered. Before the complete question was out, Mike, using his super power, spoke up saying this is what we all had wished for years ago. I hesitantly ask if Kit, my grandson, had a super power. They were not sure yet as he was only 2, but both hoped he did not have one. These powers sometimes were more of a problem than help. Some things are just better left alone. Only time would tell.
I decided I would stay a while and try to understand how this occurred. As we were gathering around the kitchen table, a knock at the door interrupted us. Kate using her power tells the front door to open and in strolls the neighbor explaining that he had noticed a man plotting to break into their house last night. As he was drifting off to sleep his super power of seeing things happen before they actually did allowed him to see this burglar before he arrived. At which time he jumped from his bed and ran over to thwart his attempt. Seeing that the house was dark he decided to wait til morning to let them know.
Wow, that power would be handy to have, but apparently only one super power per person was allowed. All had advantages and disadvantages. As I was taking in all of this I realized that I would not want to read minds nor have mine read. Nor would I enjoy being able to transport place to place because relationships would suffer it seemed. A fast paced life would not allow getting to know people as we should. Then, there is the power of commanding objects to do as you say from wherever you are. This power seemed a little dangerous to me. What if a knock at the door was not someone you wished to allow in yet you open the door anyway without knowing who is on the other side? The only power I thought may be handy was the neighbor’s power of seeing things before they actually occurred. But even this one has it’s problems. Knowing what will take place before it actually does takes all the fun and anticipation out of life. How boring. Yes, it has it’s advantages as they all seem to, but life is not supposed to be like that. Life is waking up each day looking forward to what might happen and learning from struggles that you go through making you a better person.
So, keep those super powers limited to fictional characters, not real people. Let us be content with what we do have while striving to be better people.
