A lesson I have learned is to stay in the Now or today. Lessons are learned through experience and this particular lesson to stay in the Now was hard learned.
At several junctions of my life I lived in the past. Regrets, guilt, sadness and depression are just a few words to describe my life living in the past. At times it seemed I would never get out of that place. The past, that is. We all have things we wish we had done differently. If not careful these things can cause us to become hopeless and that is not the answer. We should learn from these things and move in a different direction. History is full of mistakes people have made, but we learn from them or should learn from them. History is made up of the past just as our lives are. The choices we make alter our future for the good or for the bad. It is up to us. But, the main thing is we learn from the past. We cannot change one thing that we have done, but we can learn and walk in a different direction.
Living in the future is impossible. We can make plans for it. We can hope for things, but like the past we shouldn’t live there. When we try to we miss the blessings of today, the Now. We get so caught up in what we believe is where we want to be that those around us get neglected. We become selfish, not loving and giving toward others. We lose track of today and miss so much. Life becomes stressful and we become angry. Things never move fast enough and when we get to one point instead of enjoying the moment, we reach for the next thing. Always wanting more and never being content. We are not promised tomorrow so why not enjoy today? But, I have lived there as well and it is not a fun place to live.
So, the question, ‘Is my life today what I pictured a year ago?’ No, it is better because I try to stay in the Now, enjoying life today and looking for opportunities to give to others. I have found that life in the Now is the place I desire to be in. There is peace in the Now. There is joy in the Now. There is contentment in the Now. The Now is where we are supposed to be. So, learn from the past, hope for the future, but live in the Now.
