There are several things I would tell my 20 year old self if possible, but picking only one it would be, ‘Please don’t be a carbon copy. Just be you’.
Let me explain this. A carbon copy is an exact reproduction of the original. We are all originals and there are no two just alike. At 20 years old we try to be like others believing they have it right, but so not true. We are all meant to be ourselves and in so doing we offer help to others that only we can. We are relatable, helpful, and just ourselves.
At 20 years old we tend to believe others are better, smarter, prettier and a host of other qualities than we are so we follow paths not meant for us to follow. We copy another’s ways and that is a hard thing to do because it isn’t natural. We end up miserable or at the least, confused. We lose our way and usually leads us down paths we later regret. We have to start over losing all that time that could have been used to put us on top. Some lessons are hard ones and this is one.
If we just learn to be ourselves and let others be themselves a lot more could be gleaned from that time and definitely more joy in our lives. I would tell my 20 year old self that she has so much more to give than those she tries to follow so laugh at yourself, love yourself and live life to the fullest as only you can. Be an original.
