Adults get bored, too. Even with all the ‘stuff’ to take care of in a day, boredom can set in. So, what do you do during these times? The times in between the next task?
I never thought of myself as a gamer, but I have found in the last 5 years that I must be. I am the kind of person that must be busy to feel fulfilled. The list person that gets pure elation from marking off a job as complete on my list. Well, maybe elation is a bit much but you get the picture, right?
I had found myself playing games on my phone to fill the time between tasks – Yahtzee, to be exact. At first, I played a little to fill time, but the more I played, the more I enjoyed it and of course this became a problem. ‘I must beat this game’, I declared. So, I began buying dice. Every game has a page where you can purchase whatever needed to do better. In my case it was dice. The more dice you have the better your chances to win. This buying of dice escalated from a few at $2.99 to a lot at $49.99.
Yes, I caved and when I did all reasoning escaped me. There was no stopping me. An addict of Yahtzee dice. How embarrassing!
This went on for a couple years and to cover up the hatred of what I had become by throwing money away and Yahtzee becoming first priority in my life I bought more dice. What I had decided to do to pass time had now become a god in my life. More and more time spent playing Yahtzee while other matters fell by the wayside was something I hid. When you do things that you are embarrassed by and don’t tell others, you have a problem. There is a monster lurking within.
When I could no longer controll this monster, I decided to stop. Cold turkey. Withdrawals? Oh yes. Maybe you think this is nuts and it is, but not the playing of a game on your phone. No, not that. The nutty part is the escalation of time and money invested in a silly game. But, these things do happen.
So, some advice to all folks that cannot sit still and wait: Don’t play Yahtzee.
