A Second Chance

Daily writing prompt
What’s the kindest thing someone has ever done for you?

The kindest act ever done for me was my husband giving me a second chance. Not just a second chance, but one without ever bringing the subject up again. Now, that is love…

We had been together about ten years and we’re working together in ministry at a non-profit Christian rehab as counselors. I relapsed and left the center with a woman using. I had been at her house about a week when my husband and another leader at the center came by. Mu husband asked me to come back and leave that house, but I would not leave. Finally, I did call him to come get me and took a bus home to Alabama. Keep in mind that my husband was a very proud man and didn’t beg anyone for anything, including his wife to come back. We would talk daily by phone and I really missed him, but he would tell me that we needed to take things slow and listen for God. Being 6 hours away and knowing women would love to catch a man like him had me on pins and needles constantly. I wanted him to tell me to come back, but he would just say that we needed to pray about it and wait on God. This drove me crazy. Although I made this mess I didn’t know how to fix it and wasn’t sure he wanted me to come back. I mean, everyone there knew what had transpired and he had to face those people everyday. I later learned that he had stood in front of all the leaders and residents to quiet the rumors swirling. He stated that he and I would be together in spite of what I had done. That he loved me and we were going to get through this. Wow! This awesome man humbled himself to say these words after what I had done. I could never top that one if I tried. But, the love for me that this showed was unimaginable and I would never forget it.

Not only did he do this but he never brought it up to me again. He just continued loving me. It was this love that made me begin to love myself. Never had anyone gave me a gift such as this. I do not think I ever thanked him or told him how much that meant to me and now he is gone, but if by chance he can hear me now and I hope he can – ‘ Thank you, sweetheart for loving me like no other and proving this by your actions during what must have been the most humiliating time of your life’. I will never forget you or your act of grace. I loved you then. I love you now. I will love you forever.

A second chance not deserved…
