The Lesson

How many times must a lesson be given? I guess as many times as it takes to get it right.  The lesson given to me over and over came in the form of heartbreak, aka grief.

Four times this lesson was placed in front of me. All with varying degrees of pain, but pain just the same. Was a lesson learned? I guess not or at least not the lesson expected to learn. Did it get easier? No, not easier – that road is never easy. The love types are different, but love is love.

In 2005, my brother and only sibling passed away at age 39. Thirteen months younger than I so as you can see it was hard. I hurt a lot but the test I flunked and the lesson did not get learned. I took nothing away from this experience. It was destined for repeat all without me knowing.

In 2019, a double whammy hit my life. March of that year, my Daddy passed away. The pain reached into the depths of my soul as I screamed loudly into the night. November took my Mom within 30 days and shock took over with the pain. Why? I didn’t understand and again the test was destined to repeat itself. Lesson not learned.

In February of this year, 2026, I was given the test once more. This time it was the worst. Suddenly without warning my husband of 27 years passed without reason. The pain cannot be described. The ache, the hollowness fills my heart. I am left all alone.

What lesson did I need to learn?  There is no one else to take except myself and that at times would be a blessing I think. I search my heart for an answer and come up with the following.

1. Love with all you have and never take another for granted. 2. Embrace the ways others embrace you and never remain upset with them. 3. Don’t sweat the small stuff and everything is small stuff. 4.  Be grateful for the things others fill your life with and remember we are all different. 5. Thank others daily, hug others often, enjoy time spent together and  don’t rush time spent with others. What is so important that relationships are rushed?

6. Remember everyday that tomorrow is not promised. Live and love today. 7. Throw caution to the wind and you be the better person by humbling yourself and embracing others especially those that have hurt you or let you down. 8. You go first. 9.Unlearn the meaning of regret by not practicing it.

And…. repeat #1. Love with all you have and don’t take others for granted. That would be the answer to the lesson.
